Unit Counselor Responsibilities

Jobs may be distributed to counselors in unit, to parents, and even to campers.

Requirements:

1.      Be willing to help/plan before camp starts and during camp time.

2.      GSUSA registered

3.      Experience working with girls at level of unit assigned helpful.

4.      Provide a health history record to the day camp staff

  • Guide the campers through an age-appropriate program for the unit assigned.  Take unit to centers and camp assigned activities.

  • Attend unit field trips, overnights, and special activities as scheduled.

  • Prepare activities for campers during down time (when not in centers or special activities). This does not necessarily involve buying or bringing extra crafts.  Activities could include hikes, games, singing, rest period, making unit flag, making swaps, preparing song for camp show, reading a book to campers, etc.

  • Work with teen staff and other adult counselors in unit.

  • Be ready to plan, buy food, and cook with campers one unit meal during the week .  A parent could buy food. Some home/troop cooking equipment may be needed.

  • Support girl ownership and planning as much as possible.

  • Explain health and safety procedures to your unit campers.

  • Supervise unit housekeeping, sanitation, care of supplies and equipment, as applies. 

  • Assure unit area assigned is neat and clean, removing unit trash, sweeping tents or cabins, cleaning fire areas, and removing personal belongings.

  • Do camp kapers when assigned to unit.  Kapers could include cleaning latrines, camp litter pick-up, flag ceremonies, cleaning lodges, morning and afternoon bus boarding duty, campfire for camp show, etc.

  • Take daily attendance and turn in sheet to office, daily.

  • Turn in news items about your unit to the office for a camp newsletter or the camp web page.

  • Record camper accomplishments on try-it/badge/IP sheets for parents and troop advisors. Give a summarized copy of this info to camp office on Friday.

  • Turn in unit reports and materials requested to camp office on Friday.

  • Be courteous to other units, areas, and campers.

All Counselors:

  • Stay with your assigned unit at all times, unless on a pre-arranged short break.

  • Arrive and depart camp on time  (8:45am-3:45pm if not riding the bus).  Sign in every day at flag.  If leave early or arrive late, must sign out/in at camp office.  Coordinate such with other counselors assigned with you and director.

  • Follow the day camp safety rules as stated in the Camp Counselor manual, Safety Wise, as announced daily, and posted at camp.  Receive safety rules at camp meetings.  Camp Manual found at camp web site, staff page.  Wear appropriate clothing at camp.

  • Be aware of supply locations at camp (area tubs, TP, water, etc.). 

  • Attend day camp training (if not already taken) and camp meetings, both before camp and during camp.  Usually during camp one representative will attend, not all.
